Neurocosmetic | the holistic approach to skin care

Neurocosmetic is a new concept that acts on the mind via the skin.

Neurocosmetic provides consumers with a holistic approach to caring for their skin based on the communication between the nerve system and the skin through neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messages released by skin nerve fibres with similar characteristics to nerve cells. Recent research has found that skin cells, such as keratinocytes, melanocytes, and fibroblasts, produce and secrete neurotransmitters.

Unlike traditional cosmetic actives, which limit the consequences of daily aggressors on the skin, Neurocosmetic actives either inhibit or activate messages to the mind, playing an essential role in skin balance.

Of the 200+ neurotransmitters discovered so far, 25 are found on the skin – and of these 25, most are neuropeptides.

Neuropeptides

Neuropeptides are compounds of two or more bonded amino acids and occur naturally in the body, and they are released by brain cells either as neurotransmitters or as hormones.

Without neuropeptides, communication between the brain and the body wouldn’t function properly. Unfortunately, as we age, so does our body’s production of neuropeptides. But thanks to necessary skin research, neurocosmetic actives are being developed, such as Ôcaline and Betaphroline.

Ôcaline soothes sensitive skin by inhibiting a neurotransmitter that induces itching, redness and swelling.

Betaphroline provides a feeling of well-being by releasing beta-endorphins – neuro-hormones are known for their analgesic properties.
